Working from home sounds like a luxury, doesn’t it? You could work in your pajamas from bed all day, eating snacks, watching movies, and take naps. Right? Wrong. Freelancers should gain support to beat loneliness. Those who have been freelancing for a while knows that that’s not how it works. Many of us work other jobs or have children around while we work. Though, those who don’t struggle and become a lonely freelancer. I have heard it from a lot of freelancers. You can go all day without talking to one person. As an introvert (well ambivert — Thanks to my friend Annie who pointed that out), I like the sound of that. I say that, but by day three, I know I would be going insane. Therefore, I came up with some ways to overcome this loneliness as a freelancer.
How to Beat Loneliness to Change Your Lonely Freelancer Status
1. Go work somewhere else.
There are a lot of places that have co-working spaces that you can work in, instead of working from home to beat loneliness. Many people have done this and say it makes a big difference when they are surrounded by people.
2. Join a group after work
Knowing you have an upcoming event can make you feel less lonely. When surrounded by coworkers, you can get distracted at times. If you can find focus, but know you have to be out the door at a certain time for a meetup event, you will feel less lonely. If you have trouble thinking of ideas, look up your city’s website. There are many events in your area you can join in.
3. Coffee or lunch date
If you need to meet up with someone, make plans for an early coffee morning before you start work, or a lunch date to help break up your busy day.
4. Join an empowering group for you and your business
Think about joining a group to help you grow your business. This may take away from your work but it can help you beat loneliness. Many have heard of these groups called Mastermind groups. I am a part of one, and I can’t tell you how much it is helping me and my business.
5. Get to know yourself
I understand this post is about feeling alone, but why not learn to love yourself and being alone? Have you gone on many hikes in your town? Ever gone out to eat alone? Some of these are hard to do if you are a person who doesn’t know how to be alone. A lot of women who have said to me, “I don’t know how I could live without him. (speaking about her spouse)” It’s sad to me that people don’t know how to be alone.
Of course, we love our significant others, but if you don’t know how to love yourself and be alone, you’re not going to be good for anyone else. I challenge you to find what makes you happy. Being a lonely freelancer is a problem many don’t speak of. Take these tips and share them with our freelance friends to help them beat loneliness. We don’t want anyone to be lonely, especially if you are working freelance to have more freedom!
